Our energy level depletes faster as we grow older. As a result, many of us choose to spend more time at home. With factors such as limited mobility, inconvenience, and weather, many elderly do not get around as much.

A sedentary lifestyle is not ideal for our health, especially if you or your loved one uses a wheelchair. While there are practical and easy exercises that can be done despite using a wheelchair, the best is still to get out of the house to enjoy the fresh air.

Without further ado, here are four fun activities caregivers and elderlies can enjoy together when outdoors.

1. Go for a walk

One of the most effective and straightforward activities to enjoy outdoors is to go for a walk. Walking is a low-impact activity that is not only a great form of exercise but also easy on the joints.

Getting a walker or a rollator can help to encourage them to move about. For those who are limited in mobility, getting a wheelchair will come in handy. Depending on their specific mobility requirements, you may want to look into motorised options or electric scooters for elderlies.

2. Have a picnic

Picnics are ideal outdoor activities that do not require much walking. All you need is an excellent packed lunch, some sunblock, and insect repellent, and you are good to go.

3. Go birdwatching

Malaysia has strategic location where many migratory birds rest. Over 40 different species of migratory birds stop over at Malaysia, from eagles to shorebirds. Birdwatching is ideal for getting fresh air while being able to appreciate mother nature.

4. Gardening

Whether you own a backyard garden or just an outdoor balcony, gardening offers tons of health benefits for your elderly loved ones. Planting herbs, vegetables, and flowers is a great way to add life and colour into their lives, as well as a source of food too!

There are many other ways that elderlies and their caregivers can enjoy together outdoors, even if they are not as mobile as they used to be. Whether it is for a couple of hours or the entire day, being out of home is definitely better than being cooped up indoors. So, the next time your loved ones want to stay at home, encourage them to step out of the house and enjoy what mother nature has to offer.
